Sarat Pujari Biography

Sarat Pujari is a noted film actor from Ollywood, Oriya film industry. He played lead role in National award winning Nua Bou, directed by Prabhat Mukherjee. He has also acted in Jiban Sathi (1963), Matira Manisha (1966), Kaa (1966), Arundhati (1967), Tapoi (1978), Ashanta Graha (1982), Astaraga (1982), Andha Diganta (1988), Bhukha (1989), Drusti (1990), Aranya Rodan (1992), Shesha Drushti (1997) and Aranyaka. He has worked with actor and noted Oriya film personality Prashanta Nanda in his debut movie, Nua Bou and Matira Manisha. Government of Orissa conferred upon him the "Jayadev Award of 1985" for his significant contribution to Oriya Film Industry. He was also honoured with Hemanta Das Kala Samman in 2011 and Orissa Cine Artist Association Award in 2012.

Pujari was born on 8 August 1934 at Nayagarh. He completed his post graduation in Economics and Diploma in Paintings in Allahabad University in 1956. He was interested in drama during his college days. He started his career as a block designer and Publicity agent. In 1959, He joined as a lecturer in Economics in Panchayat College, Bargarh. But he quit his job as principal at the age of 34 in 1966 and joined Tapang Light Foundery, Nayagarh as a Works Manager. Pujari started his career in movies during 1960’s. He left his service to learn more about film industry. After quitting the job, he learnt film making technique for the next two years.

At that time, Oriya film industry was not as developed as today. Number of movies released every year was just one or two. He was offered a role in film Laxmi puja and thus began the successful journey of Pujari. He has been the top star of Oriya film industry at one time. Apart from acting in about 40 movies, he has also directed two movies, Tapoi and Ashanta graham. He has also worked in television serials.
