N. N. Wanchoo Biography

N. N. Wanchoo was a civil servant who also served as Governor of the Indian states of Kerala and Madhya Pradesh during April 1, 1973 to October 10, 1977 and 14 October 1977 – 17 August 1978 respectively. Began his career as a Sub-Collector in Bihar, he rose to many prominent administrative positions later. Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and Chief Controller of Defence production for 9 years since 1948, Secretary to Government of India Ministry of Finance for one year since 1960, Chairman of the Bokaro Steel plant (1965–70) and Secretary, Department of Industrial Development during 1968 – 1970 are some of the major positions held by him.

 

His full name is Niranjan Nath Wanchoo. He was born on 1 May 1910. He joined Indian Civil Service in 1934 during the British Raj, and started off as a Sub-Collector in Bihar. Since then he had held many decorative positions in his long administrative service. He closely worked with Ministry of Finance and Defence and many more sectors associated with central government.  He retired from government service as Chairman of Industrial Customs and Prices Bureau in 1972. He has served as the head of planning commission to look into industrial development for the backward areas in India, and it was named as Wanchoo Committee.

 

After his retirement from government service, he started his second innings in administrator role itself. He was appointed as the 6th Governor of Kerala from April 1, 1973. He served the post till October 10, 1977. He also served as Governor of Madhya Pradesh from October 14, 1977 to August 16, 1978. He served as Chairman of Delhi Urban Art Commission in 1982 just before he passed away the same year.
