M. Raja Biography

M. Raja is a successful Tamil film director. Actor Jayam Ravi is his younger brother and together they have worked for many Tamil hits like Jayam, M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi, Something Something... Unakkum Enakkum, Santosh Subramaniam and Thillalangadi. In fact, Ravi made his successful debut through the movie Jayam directed by his brother in 2002 and almost all of his successful films were directed by his elder brother himself. Their upcoming project is Thani Oruvan, which is scheduled to get released in 2014. Raja is to debut as an actor with the movie - Enna Satham Indha Neram directed by Guru Ramesh. He directs movies under his home production – Jayam Company.

Raja is the son of film producer and editor Mohan who guides him a lot in the film industry. He is also referred to as ‘Raja of Remakes’ as all his movies have been remakes of successful Telugu films, the only exception being his debut film, Hanuman Junction made in Telugu language itself. This movie is the remake of Malayalam blockbuster Thenkasi Pattanam of year 2000. All his movies have been commercially successful too, though they can’t be claimed to be original ones. According to him, to make remakes commercially successful is really challenging as a theme successful at one region may not be accepted by another language people or region. With his effective team work, he works on all odds and evens to bring the best. He re-invents seasoned actors and successful in his novel casting.

He has carved a niche for himself in making family entertainers. Apart from his debut movie, he has directed one more movie without his brother in lead role. It’s the super successful movie, Velayudham released in 2011 which starred Vijay, Genelia D'Souza and Hansika Motwani in lead roles. Till now, he has done 5 successful movies with Jayam Ravi and their upcoming project, Thani Oruvan is to release soon which features Nayantara in lead role.
