Krishna Govinda Gupta Biography

Krishna Govinda Gupta was an Indian civil servant, Statesman, lawyer and administrator from West Bengal who lived during the period, 28 February 1851 - 20 March 1926. He was a prominent Bengali social reformer of 19th Century, who was associated with Brahma Samaj. His son-in-laws were prominent figures from Bengal too. His daughter Hem Kusum married Atul Prasad Sen - an artist, writer and philanthropist from Bengal. His daughter Nilini Gupta was married to Sir Albion Rajkumar Banerjee, who was an Indian civil servant and administrator from Bengal, and Diwan of Cochin and Mysore. Albion Rajkumar Banerjee’s parents, Sasipada Banerji and Rajkumari Banerji were social activists and educationalists who promoted women education and stood for their rights.

 

Krishna Govinda Gupta was born in Bhatpara village of Narsingdi district in Bengal during British rule. The place now belongs to Bangladesh. He belonged to a family of landlords. His father was Kali Narayan Gupta and mother was Annada Sundari Gupta. He studied at Mymensingh Government School and Dacca College, and then moved to London for higher studies. He stood second at Open Competitive Examination and joined Indian civil service after that. He was the 7th Indian to successfully clear ICS. He joined civil service as a probationary officer in 1871 and moved back to India two years later. He married Prasanna Tara Gupta, and couple had 5 children.

 

He joined Civil Service on 24 October 1873 as Assistant Magistrate and Collector. It was a time when elite administrative positions were exclusively reserved for British, and it was not easy for Indians to clear civil service exams or serve in top positions. He served in the special duty of controlling famine in Bengal and Bihar during 1873-74, and later served the positions of joint magistrate and deputy collector in 1884, magistrate and collector in 1889 and some decorative positions.
