John Matthew Matthan Biography

John Matthew Matthan is a Bollywood filmmaker from Kerala, best known for 1999 Aamir Khan movie Sarfarosh. The movie also starred Sonali Bendre, Mukesh Rishi and Naseeruddin Shah in pivot roles. The movie was highly praised by critics for direction as well as performances and was a commercial hit too. The movie is regarded as the career breakthrough of Aamir Khan, the movie through which he destroyed his ‘chocolate hero’ image. In this movie, he played the role of ACP Ajay Singh Rathod. John started his film career as an assistant director for 1980 movie Akrosh followed by 1982 Academy winner, Gandhi.

Since school days, he dreamt to become a film director. John started his career in the early 1980’s as an assistant director. With the movie Aakrosh, he became a close friend of film critic and director, Govind Nihlani with whom John has been associated with several movies later. Gandhi and Aakrosh were released almost in the same period. After assist Nihlani for several films he shifted to directing advertisements. He set up his own production company, Cinematt Pictures Pvt Ltd in Mumbai in the early 1990s. The first movie released under this production company was Sarfarosh in 1999. It was oen of the best movies of the year and earned the director instant stardom. He was well praised by the critics. However he vanished from the industry.

His second movie, Shikar was released in 2005. The movie starred Shahid Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, and Bipasha Basu in lead roles. Though the movie earned critics’ appreciation, it didn’t perform well at box office. His third movie, A New Love Ishtory was released in 2013. Himesh Reshammiya and Niharika Singh played lead roles in the movie. Though the movie was completed in 2009, it delayed due to fall out between T-Series baron Bhushan Kumar and Himesh Reshammiya.
