Amarnath Jha Biography

Amarnath Jha was an educator who lived during the period, 1896 – 1955. He was also a scholar, orator and administrator par excellence. He has served as the Vice Chancellor of University of Allahabad and Banaras Hindu University in the pre-independent India. He was the son of Dr. Sir Ganganath Jha, a great scholar of Sanskrit who lived during the period, 25 December 1872 – 9 November 1941. He was appointed as the head of English department of University of Allahabad when he was only 32 years old. He was also among the first who received the civilian honour, Padma Bhushan when he received it in the year 1954. He passed away the following year at the age of 59.

 

Dr. Amarnath Jha was born into a Brahmin family in Mithila, Bihar. He was born into a family of intellectuals. His father Ganganath Jha was a great scholar of Sanskrit and philosophy and a pandit of Nyaya Shastra. He was a veteran educationist and Vice Chancellor who also authored a few books. Amarnath’s younger brother Adityanath Jha was a brilliant student in the Allahabad University, who topped the list of successful candidates in the I. C. S. examination of 1934. After studies Amarnath began his career as a Reader in English, and later went on to become one of the most renowned educationalists among his contemporaries.  

 

Jha was a profound scholar in Sanskrit, and also learnt Persian, Urdu, Bengali, English and Hindi. He was an avid reader with his library containing a vast number of books. He died in his middle ages at 59, when he was so much to give to the field of education. He passed away on 9 November 1941 in Patna. "Amarnath Jha Hostel" in Allahabad University is named after him.
