A. R. Murugadoss Biography

A. R. Murugadoss is a successful film director of Indian cinema. With the super success of Ghajani in North and South, he has become one of the most-wanted directors of the list. He has directed Tamil, Hindi and Telugu movies. Yet he has worked in Tamil movies most. As a director, his movies include – Dheena, Ramana, Ghajani (Tamil and Hindi), Stalin, 7aum Arivu and Thuppakki. As a producer his latest release is Raja Rani, with Arya and Nayantara playing the leading roles. Now he concentrates on less number of movies, post Gajani’s success and his next Bollywood project, Holiday has been announced. He has also produced Engaeyum Eppothum, Vatthikuchi and yet to release movie, Maan Karate.

 

Murugadoss was born in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. He was active in cultural events during his college days. He completed graduation in Arts from Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirapalli. His first film was Dheena released in the year 2001. The film starring Ajith and Laila was one of the big hits of 2001. This movie received positive responses from critics as well. He has a successful association with Suriya with whom, he made Ghajani (Tamil) and 7aum Arivu. He became an iconic figure all over India when he got the opportunity to direct Aamir and Asin, in the Hindi remake of his successful Tamil movie, Ghajani with the same title. The much awaited project was released in the year 2008 with A. R. Rahman’s music and it created new records of highest opening Indian movie, in terms of box office collection. Thus Ghajini became the first Bollywood film to cross the mark of 100 crore rupees. The climax of the original was changed entirely giving it a fresh look.

 

During his college days, he was interested in mimicry and drawing. Slowly his attention was drawn towards movies and he began to watch movies frequently. He tried to join the Madras Film Institute, but was rejected. Then he became an assistant writer of P. Kalaimani and wrote dialogues of Madurai Meenakshi. He became assistant director of Ratchagan (1997) and later made a successful debut as a director with the movie, Dheena in 2001.
