Suresh Kumar Neotia Biography

Suresh Kumar Neotia was an industrialist and entrepreneur, who co-founded Ambuja Cements. Known as a philanthropist as well, Suresh was an art collector too. For his overall contributions to trade and industry, Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan in 2008. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Harvard Business School - Economic Times Award. He was fully involved in many social and cultural events, also known as a promoter. He passed away in Kolkata on 7 May 2015, aged 78.

 

Suresh Kumar Neotia was born in Kolkata, West Bengal in the year 1936. He was born into a business family with century old tradition. He joined family business in the early 1950s. Later he along with with Narotam Sekhsaria started Gujarat Ambuja Cements Limited (GACL) in 1983. The company took over ACC Limited after 15 years, and expanded to become one of the leading cement companies of India. The company reached production capacity of over 22 million tonnes and a market capitalization of over 152 billion Indian rupees. He served as the chairman of the Group till his retirement from the post in 2009. Till 2011 he remained as one of its executive directors.

 

He has also served as the chairman of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited, and a board member of a series of corporate organizations during his active years. He was also involved with several educational institutions and universities. Known as a philanthropist, most of his activities were linked through the organizations - Neotia Foundation and Sri Govind Deo Ji Trust. He suffered from renal problems and cancer during last years and passed away in 2015.
