Deepak Puri Biography

Deepak Puri is an Indian businessman and entrepreneur best known for starting Moser Baer, a giant manufacturing company in the field of CDs and Floppies.  For his overall contributions towards the field of the growth of Indian industry, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010. However his company witnessed bankruptcy in 2018 and was liquidated. His wife Nita Puri is the sister of Senior Congress Leader and Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Kamal Nath.

 

Deepak Puri was born into a rich family of landlords, and his early education was completed in New Delhi. However he got fascinated with the field of business. He was not interested in agriculture or to take a white collar job in government sector. So soon after completing his Engineering studies from Imperial College, London, he decided to pursue business in the early 1960s. Initially he worked with ESSO in Kolkata and Shalimar Paints for a brief period, before he set up his first company in metal business. Initially he was associated with metal trading and later he took to manufacturing as well.

 

Almost after 2 decades, he was forced to wind up his business because of labour cost issues in Kolkata, and he moved to his hometown in Delhi, where he started new business. He collaborated with Switzerland based Moser Baer to start Moser Baer India in 1983 and slowly came to prominence in the 1990s and 2000s. He ventured into CD production in 2001. He plunged full scale optical media business, starting with floppy discs, moving on to CDs and later DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Moser Baer India's revenues were only Rs 138.5 crore in 2001, and in 2003-2004, it reached Rs 1,585.6 crore.
