Sanjiv Mehta (british Businessman) Biography

Sanjiv Mehta is a British Businessman of Indian origin who is the owner of "The East India Company". He revived and re-launched the company in 2010 which was dissolved on 1 June 1874. In the mid-2000s, he bought a majority stake in several companies with names similar to the old East India Company in the early 2000s. Many of those companies have been either renamed or newly incorporated to make its name similar with East India Company. By 2011, Mehta had invested around £20 million in the new business, and other investors like Mahindra Group and Lulu Group have also joined the venture by investing their money.

Sanjiv Mehta was born in a Gujarati family in Mumbai in 1961. His grandfather started diamond trading business in Belgium in the 1920s. But the family later moved to India in 1938 when Sanjiv’s father Mahendra was 5 years old. Later the family settled in Mumbai and continued with diamond business. Sanjiv was born in 1961. He completed his graduation Sydenham College Mumbai and pursued higher studies in Los Angeles. Sanjiv joined family business in 1983. His elder brother too was associated with diamond business.

Sanjiv focused on the jewellery business and held diamond exhibitions in gulf countries. He marketed this business in Middle-East too. In 1989 he moved to London when he found it hard to expand his business, and then set up a mail order business, selling UK-made household products within the country. He bought a scrapyard in Newcastle upon Tyne, started selling steel to small plants in India and thus began his successful journey in new venture. He exported Hindustan Unilever products to Russia and by mid-2000s, Mehta bought a majority stake in several companies and renamed it similar to historical East India Company.
