S. Ramachandra Biography

S. Ramachandra was a very talented cinematographer of Indian film industry, who worked both in South Indian film industry as well as Bollywood. His full name is Shivaramaiah Ramachandra Aithal. He won National award for best cinematography in 1977 for the Kannada feature film Rishya Shringa. He won Filmfare award for best cinematographer for Bollywood movie, Yadein – the movie credited as the first feature film in the world cinema with a single actor. The movie was produced, directed and the single character was played by Sunil Dutt. In 2006, he was honoured with Karnataka Film Lifetime Achievement Award by Karnataka state government. He belonged to the first generation graduates from FTII, Pune. He was the cinematographer of famous serial of Doordarshan – Malgudi days.

 

He was born in Bangalore in the state of Karnataka. He was an excellent student who secured a rank in pre-university course. Then he joined National Film and Television Institute in Pune to learn cinematography. After the completion of the course, he assisted as an assistant cameraman for U.M.N. Sharif, who worked in Kannada movies of Girish Karnad and B.V. Karanth. During the shooting of “Vamsha vriksha”, his real potential was recognized by P.V. Nanjaraja Urs, who offered him the cinematographer role in his upcoming movie - “Sankalpa”, which marked Ramachandra’s independent career as a cinematographer. This movie won his first state award for best cinematography.

 

Later he worked in many Kannada movies of which Chomana Dudi, Ghatashraddha, Mukhaputa, Mane, Deveeri and Rushya Shringa are his noted works. Rushya Shringa won him National award for best cinematographer. He is also known for his association with acclaimed writer, Girish Kasaravalli. Their association began with the movie, Ghatashradhdha followed by Mane, Kraurya, Naayi Neralu, Hasina and Gulabi Talkies. He has been associated with directors belonging to mainstream as well as parallel cinema and has also worked in a few Bollywood movies.
