  Sunil Dutt is most popularly known as the Bollywood star of yesterdays – 50’s to 70’s who has given valuable contributions for movies like Mother India, Mera Saaya, Mujhe jeene do, Khaandan, Humraaz, Padosan, Gumraah and Milan. He was a successful politician as well, who has been elected to parliament many times. During Manmohan Singh’s government (2004) he served in the cabinet as Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for a couple of years. His wife Nargis Dutt is considered as the most talented actress of Indian cinema and his son, Sanjay Dutt is a very successful hero from early 80’s and now in news with his recent arrest for TADA case.

   

  As an artist Sunil Dutt started his work in Ceylon radio station and slowly he moved to films during 50’s. Railway platform (1955) was his first movie. But his negative role as Nargis’ son in Mother India helped Guru Dutt to rise to stardom. After that he didn’t look back and got success one after the other. Sujatha and Sadhana are other notable films of Guru Dutt during 50’s and his association with B.R.Chopra gave him many successful movies like Waqt, Gumraah and Humraaz. He is also famous for all time classic comedy – Padosan, opposite Saira Banu. He created a unique record in 1964 with the movie, ‘Yaadein’. Directed by himself, he was the only actor featured in the movie. As a producer he has done a few unsuccessful movies like Reshma aur Shera and Man ka meet.

   

  He has been successfully casted with almost all leading ladies of 60’s and his duets have been popular too. He was considered as romantic hero that time. Actresses like Saira Banu, Sadhana, Nutan, Waheeda Rehmaan, Asha Parekh, Vaijayanthi mala, Vimi, Mala Sinha, Mumtaz and Madhubala. Among all the actresses he was successful most with Nutan and has done many classic movies like Sujatha, Milan and khandan. He has done a couple of hit movies with Mala Sinha too. He has won Filmfare award twice for his powerful performance in Mujhe jeene do as dacoit and Khandan as a peasant and loving brother. For the movie ‘Milan’ telling the story of incarnation, he won BFJA Awards. Other noted movies of Sunil Dutt include Paapi, Nagin, Jaani Dushman and Munna Bhai MBBS. His last movie was ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ as Sanjay Dutt’s father and one year later, he left the world.
