Rana Kapoor Biography

Rana Kapoor is an Indian banker who is the founder, managing director and CEO of Yes Bank, one of the private banks in the commercial sector of India. He is a billionaire and one of the most successful businessmen of the country. Yes Bank Limited is India's fourth largest private sector bank, founded by Rana Kapoor and his brother-in-law Ashok Kapur in 2004, and it primary operates as a corporate bank. He is a recipient of honorary fellowship from All India Management Association, President's Medal from Rutgers University where he took MBA and an honorary doctorate from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology.

 

Rana Kapoor was born on 9 September 1957 in New Delhi. His younger days were spent in Delhi itself where he completed his education. He graduated in economics from Shri Ram College of Commerce in 1977 and later obtained an MBA degree from Rutgers University, US in 1980. His professional career began as a banker the same year at Bank of America, where he joined as a management trainee. Kapoor worked at BoA for about 16 years, till 1996, and rose to high positions within the bank. His performance has been awarded by the bank.

 

He started thinking about starting a private sector bank in India in 1995, making use of opportunities, and he joined hands with his brother-in-law Ashok Kapur and Harkirat Singh. It happened when a team from Rabobank arrived in India seeking opportunities to invest in banking sector in India, and the trio put forward their proposal for two joint ventures: a non-banking financial company and a bank. NBFC was set up 1997 and Yes Bank finally came to existence in 2004. Its co-founder Ashok Kapur died in 2008.
