Ramana Maharshi Biography

Ramana Maharshi was a saint and spiritual leader from Tamil Nadu who lived during the period, 1879–1950. He was one of the most noted holy men from south India during the first half of 20th century. He was spiritually awakened at the age of 16. He was a charismatic person who attracted many devotees and many of them worshipped him pre-assuming that he is an incarnation. He was an exponent of Vedanta.

He believed in the power of silence and used only a less words during his speeches. He talked to his disciples sparingly. He neither created any lineage nor publicized himself. He didn’t even claim to have many disciples and never appointed any successors. He never received initiation also. He was a silent saint absorbed in Samadhi. Though he believed the principles of Vedanta, he was inclined towards Shaivism. ‘Sri Ramana Leela’ is his Telugu biography authored by Krishna Bhikshu.

He was born in Tiruchuzhi, Tamil Nadu in 1879 to a court pleader. He was a mischievous kid good in sports during his childhood. After his father’s death, he began to think about the truth behind death. He was spiritually awakened at the age of 16 and in 1896 he left his home. It happened when one of his acquaintances told him that he just returned from Arunachala. The single word, Arunachala seemed a blissful entity and very soon, he decided to go the place. Later he travelled through different parts of south India where he interacted with people. It was a part of self-enquiry seeking answer to his question, who I am. He reached the temple of Arunachaleswara in 1896 where he spent his life later.
