Sri Chinmoy Biography

Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, popularly known as Sri Chinmoy was a spiritual teacher who dedicated his life in the service of humanity and teachings. He spent his valuable 43 years in West preaching his spiritual principles. He has students in more than 60 countries across the globe and has also authored several books. Apart from being a spiritual guru and prolific author, he was also known as an artist, poet, and musician. Chinmoy also advocated athleticism to achieve spiritual enlightenment and also organized many marathons to propagate his ideas.

 

He was born on 27 August 1931 in Shakpura Village, Chittagong of present day Bangladesh. He was the youngest of seven children and lost both his parents in the teens. He lacked formal education. Similar to his elder siblings he too became a member of Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry where he spent 20 years for spiritual practice. He also learnt literature during this period and assisted Nolini Kanta Gupta. In 1964 he moved to New York. It was following a wakeup call inside his soul and he decided to dedicate his life for the service of humanity and spirituality.   

 

He delivered lectures about Hinduism in gatherings and educational institutions such as colleges. He offered the musicians a disciplined spiritual path and many world-famous musicians of 1970s were drawn towards his ideologies to give up drugs and follow a disciplined spiritual path. ‘Love Devotion Surrender’ was an album released by famous musicians Santana and McLaughlin, based on his teachings and both stayed with Chinmoy for many years.

 

Chinmoy opened up meditation centers and gave music concerts around the world. He published books and delivered speeches based on his writings. He travelled widely and dedicated his time for peace and spirituality of common man. He established his first meditation center in Queens, New York and now has followers across 60 nations. Chinmoy passed away in 2007 in New York.
