Bulleh Shah Biography

Bulleh Shah was a Punjabi Islamic philosopher and Sufi poet who lived in the Mughal era. He lived during the period, 1680 – 1757. Bulleh Shah was born in 1680 in Uch, Multan Subah and now his birthplace belongs to Pakistan. His family descend directly from the Prophet Muhammad. He is also called Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah. He is widely regarded as the ‘King of Sufi Poetry’. He was also a humanist, teacher, rebel and internationalist, truly a legend. He was a contemporary of Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

 

His poems are still loved by many, and many of his popular poems have been used in Bollywood films as such or with a few modifications. "Tere Ishq Nachaya" is one of his most popular and celebrated poems, which has been rendered by singers later and used for films as well. Some of its verses have been used for the iconic folk song of Dil Se - "Chaiyya Chaiyya" and "Thayya Thayya", and also Raavan, both composed by A. R. Rahman for Maniratnam. 2016 Bollywood films "Sultan" and “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” included songs titled – Bulleya, and also films like A Wednesday and Total Siyapaa - a true tribute to the poet.  Many other music bands like Junoon, lyricists and music composers have given their tributes to the versatile writer through their film songs.

 

His ancestors had migrated from Bukhara in modern Uzbekistan. His family relocated to Malakwal when he was a child. Shah received his early education from Pandoke and later moved to Kasur for higher education. His first spiritual teacher was Shah Inayat Qadiri from Lahore, who played a vital role in developing his love for Sufism. Tere Ishq Nachaya, Bulleya Ki Jana Main Kaun, Ishq De Naween Naween Bahar, Verhe Aa Varh Mere, Main Jana Jogi De Naal, Aa Mil Yaar, Uth Gaye Gawandon Yaar, Makkeh Gaya, Gal Mukdee Naheen, Bas Karjee Hun Bas Karjee etc are among his renowned works.
