Brajendra Nath Seal Biography

Sir Brajendra Nath Seal was a humanist philosopher, writer, poet and educator who lived in Bengal in the late 19th century. He was one of the original thinkers of the Brahmo Samaj. He was a polymath with deep knowledge in philosophy and many more things. He was a classmate of Swami Vivekananda. He met Vivekananda for the first time in 1881. They were fellow-students of Principal William Hastie at the General Assembly's College. Brajendra Nath Seal was a firm believer in the cause of rationalism and scientific enquiry.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1864. He got attracted to Brahmo theology while a student. With his classmate and friend Narendranath Dutta (Swami Vivekananda) he started attending the meetings of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. They also tried to understand the spiritual insight into the works of writers like Auguste Comte and Herbert Spencer. Seal was attracted towards mathematics and logic. He completed M.A. degree in philosophy and started his teaching career. Later he worked in many colleges as a professor and also served as Principal. He was the first Indian principal at Coochbihar Victoria College. The college was later renamed Acharya Brajendra Nath Seal College.

 

He was initially inspired by the Hegelian philosophy, but later rejected the Hegelian thesis of the linear flow of historical progress from East to West. He got attracted to postcolonialism. He systematized the humanism of the Brahmo philosophical thought. He published philosophy books as well as poetry and also served as an editor for a few journals. He also contributed articles related to the mechanical, physical and chemical theories of the ancient Hindus and other topics in Prafulla Chandra Ray’s book History of Hindu Chemistry (1911).
