He was born on 7 August 1930 in Hissar, Punjab. His father was a farmer and he was born into a middle class family. While British withdrew from India, India’s premier industrialists were busy in redrawing the new industrial map of independent India in the late 1940s and early 1950s. At that time Jindal made a blueprint of his small business in Nalwa, a village in Haryana. As he lacked experience to start a manufacturing unit, Jindal started trading in steel pipes. His first phase of business life was not so easy. But with his vision and determination he made what he dreamt of. Jindal Steel and Power was established under Jindal Organization in 1952.

He set his first factory at Liluah, near Kolkata for the manufacturing of steel pipes, bends and sockets. Later he set up a similar unit in Hissar, Haryana. Jindal -- the proprietorship was transformed into Jindal -- the organisation. In the early 1960s, Jindal R&D developed India's first 100% indigenous pipe mill in Hissar, which was a real breakthrough. In 1970, he established Jindal Strips Limited. A mini steel plant was opened in Hissar which manufactured coils and plates. From a single steel unit at Hissar, Jindal organization very soon established as a business empire.
