Mallika Sukumaran Biography

Mallika Sukumaran is a noted character artist of Malayalam cinema. She regularly appears in television serials too, mostly portraying evil mother-in-laws. Though she is successful in portraying grey shaded roles onscreen, she is a good comedian as well. Best instance of her comic roles include the movie, Romeo where she played the role of Dileep’s mother and Ivar Vivahitharaayal. Apart from Malayalam, she has also acted in a few Tamil movies. She has appeared in more than 20 television serials since late 1990’s including Enkilum ente Gopalakrishna, Shtree oru santhwanam, Indumukhi Chandramukhi, Porutham, Mahatma Gandhi colony etc.

Mallika Sukumaran is the wife of late actor of Malayalam cinema, Sukumaran who was a shining star during late 1970’s and 1980’s. She was earlier married to comedy king of Malayalam cinema, Jagathy Sreekumar in 1976. But the marriage ended in a divorce. She married Sukumaran in 1979. Two established actors of south Indian cinema, Indrajith and Prithviraj are their children. Prithviraj Sukumaran is now one of the leading stars of Malayalam who has reached Bollywood as well. Her elder son Indrajith is married to Poornima Mohan, film heroine and television anchor.

Utharayanam (1974) by G. Aravindan is Mallika's first film. In 1975 she received Kerala State award for second best actress. Her marriage with Jagathy Sreekumar in 1976 was against parents’ wife and Jagathy was not an established actor then. Mallika appeared in Malayalam movies only in supporting roles. So, life was not smooth for them and finally they drifted apart and got split. Then she married Sukumaran in 1979 and took break from the industry. She returned back to screen after Sukumaran’s unexpected death in 1997. Her return to small screen was a big success and she also appeared in movies. Megasandesam in 2001 marked her second innings as a film actress and Ammakilikkoodu was one of her noted appearances.
