Sukumaran Biography

Sukumaran was a popular hero of Malayalam cinema who was active during 70’s and 80’s.  He was a popular hero during 70s’ while concentrated on character roles during 80’s. He is also a film producer. He died of a heart attack so unexpectedly when he was only 49. His wife Mallika Sukumaran and daughter in law, Poornima are actresses of Bollywood. Both his sons, Pritviraj and Indrajeet are successful actors of cinema, who work for Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi movies. Sukumaran had his own production company, called Indraraj Creations. The most successful and critically well acclaimed movie produced under this banner was Irakal, which went to many International film festivals.

Sukumaran was born on June 10, 1948. His first break to cinema was Malayalam movie Nirmalyam, directed by M. T. Vasudevan Nair. His role was a defiant youngster in the film. He was doing a teacher’s job at Scott Christian College in Nagercoil, when he got an opportunity to act. The movie was well received winning many national awards. Yet Sukumaran didn’t get opportunities in the movies. So he began to think about returning to his original profession. That time, he was offered a role in the movie, Shankhupushpam’. The movie was successful and his role was appreciated. It helped Sukumaran to get a few meaty roles in the industry.

He has worked in many multi-star cast movies as well. His top movies during 70’s include Shalini ente koottukaari, Aniyatha valakal, Avalude Ravukal, Kolilakkam, Angadi, Bandhanam, Etho Oru Swapnam, Manasa Vacha Karmana, Ahimsha, Spodanam, Angakkuri, Kolilakkam, Theekkadal, Sandarbam, Witness, and Kottayam Kunjachanan. He worked as an inspector in detective series of Mammooty -  Oru CBI diary kurup and Jaagratha. Sukumaran has won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 1978 for his role in Bandhanam. His last movie was ‘Shibiram’ released in the year 1997.

He has worked in a few movies in negative shades as well. He was successful both as a romantic hero as well as an action hero. Among his romantic roles, Shalini ente kootukari is most memorable one. His other popular movies are  Mukham, Ulsavam, Sooryakanthi, Ee manohara theeram, Angeekaram, inakkili and katha ariyathe.
