Lalit Mohan Thapar Biography

Lalit Mohan Thapar, shortly called L. M. Thapar was the former head of Thapar group of industries. He has spent more than seven decades in the world of business. He was the son of the founder of the Thapar Group of companies, Karam Chand Thapar. Now Thapar group has entered third generation of business, with Gautam Thapar – L.M. Thapar’s nephew being the leading name right now. Gautham is the founder of the Avantha Group. Leading powerhouses such as Crompton Greaves, BILT and JCT Mills belong to Thapar group. He was single and handed over the reins of his business empire to his nephew Gautam Thapar in 2005, along with his voting rights, shares and his personal will. Earlier he was grooming Inder Mohan Thapar's son Vikram as his successor.

 

He was born in 27 October 1930 and resided at Delhi. He was an art lover and was fond of a good life. He also held a personal collection of impressive art pieces. After the death of his father Lala Karam Chand Thapar in 1963, he took over his charge as the head of Thapar Empire. Oriental Bank of Commerce, as well as Oriental Insurance were then part of Thapar group. Both these commercial institutions were later nationalized by Indian government. He took over the charge of Thapar group which held The Pioneer, Greaves Cotton, JCT Mills, JCT Electronics [4], Crompton Greaves and Ballarpur Industries. The family's assets were divided into four in 1999.

 

As he was single, he was grooming his nephew Vikram, Inder Mohan Thapar's son as his successor. Through brillainace, Gautam was able to impress L. M. Thappar and the management and he climbed positions one after the other. When Gautham through his talent made BILT's chemical division a profitable firm within one year, L. M. Thappar was impressed by it and later he declared Gautham as his successor.
