Hemendra Mohan Bose Biography

Hemendra Mohan Bose was an Indian businessman and entrepreneur from Bengal, best known as the manufacturer of Kuntalin hair oil and Delkhosh brand of perfume. He was associated with perfume business. He dealt with diverse products and was a successful businessman during British rule in India. Among his 5 children, Nitin Bose was a famous film director and cinematographer, while his daughter Malati Ghoshal was an Indian Rabindra Sangeet singer. He was the founder president of Sporting Union. Apart from perfumes, he ventured into sound recordings, colour photography, bicycle business and repairing, and many more.

 

Bose was born in 1866 in Mymensingh, West Bengal, British India during the second half of 19th century. Jaysiddhi was his ancestral home. His father’s name is Haramohan Bose. While doing his medical studies in Medical College Kolkata, he met with an eye accident and he quit his studies. In 1890, Bose began experimenting with perfume, and later ventured into perfume business. Four years later, he set up his business. He distilled perfumes, and after initial success he experimented with more products like hair oils. He created a wide range of products with different perfumes. Kuntalin hair oil and Delkhosh perfume turned successful, and he flourished in his business.

 

With early 1900s, he started a printing press near to his perfume business, and also instituted the Kuntalin Puraskar to encourage young writers. Bose was a bicycle enthusiast who loved riding bicycles and also taught his friends how to ride. His company also distributed Rover bicycles, one among his first Swadeshi ventures. He established the Great Eastern Motor Company and set up a repairing unit. With diversified products, Bose began to make sound recordings privately. He was also the pioneer of color photography in India in the first half of 20th century.
