Chandrashekhar Agashe Biography

Chandrashekhar Agashe was an Indian industrialist and lawyer from Maharashtra. He was the founder of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Ltd and served as its managing director from its inception in 1934 till his death in 1956. A well-known lawyer in the early 20th century, he also served as the President of the Bhor State Council from 1932 to 1934. His son Dnyaneshwar Agashe was an Indian businessman, cricketer, cricket administrator and philanthropist. Chandrashekhar’s business legacy is carried forward by his grandchildren, Ashutosh Agashe and Mandar Agashe who are successful entrepreneurs. Ashutosh is a former Ranji cricketer who has played domestic cricket with Maharashtra team while Mandar is a successful musician and singer who has released a few pop albums since late 1990s.

 

Chandrashekhar Agashe was born on 14 February 1888 in Bhor, present-day Maharashtra. Govind Agashe II and Radhabai Agashe were his parents, and he was the eldest of their four children. The family was traditionally occupied by bankers and money lenders. He lost his father at age 11. Though he belonged to a rich family, his paternal relatives unlawfully seized the lands. Thus Agashe along with her mother and siblings were forced to move to their maternal family at Shaniwar Peth, Pune in 1900. He took the job of a secretary at the Indian Post Office to support himself and also his family. He also provided education to his siblings.

 

Later, he was left the Omkareshwar Mandir as per owner’s will and he completed his education. Agashe married Dwarka Gokhale in 1914, a great niece of Bapu Gokhale, a general under Peshwa Baji Rao II of the Maratha Empire. The couple had a total of eleven children of which nine survived to adulthood. He had a successful career as an educator and teacher, followed by a career as a lawyer. He established Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Limited in 1934.
