Shaniwarwada is a palace fort that was built in the year 1746 by Peshwa Baji Rao I and it served as the seat of the Peshwa rulers of Maratha Empire until 1818. Many additions were made at a later period. Later in 1828, a big fire destroyed most parts of this part and only some of them survived. These remaining parts became one of the tourist attractions in Pune.
There are five gates in this fort namely Dilli Darwaza, Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja and Jambhul Darwaja. Some of the important buildings of this palace are Thorla Rayancha Diwankhana, Naachacha Diwankhana and Juna Arsa Mahal. The floors of this palace are made of polished marble and are adorned with rich Persian rugs. The scenes of the Hindu epics are drawn on the walls. The lotus shaped fountain named Hazari Karanje with sixteen lotus petals is an impressive structure here.
