Local Transportation in Kochi

Kochi has excellent public bus system that has four types of buses and red buses are the common buses and are also called line buses. They give you trouble free journey around the city. Thiru Kochi buses, orange buses and green buses are other types of buses. Orange buses are air-conditioned Volvo buses that connect many important destinations and the green buses are for standard travel and it connects many far away tourist attractions. Apart from them, there are also regular city services offered by KSRTC under JNNURM’s funding.

 

Some of the bus stations in Kochi are Vytilla Mobility Hub, Kaloor Bus Stand, Aluva Rajiv Gandhi Bus Stand, Fort Kochi Beach Road Bus Stand, Thoppumpaddy Bus Stand, Marine Drive Menaka Bus Stand, South Girlds High School Bus Stand, Thripunithura Terminus, Palarivattom Padivattom Bus Stand and Kakkanad Civil Station Bus Stand.

 

Though there is not intra city train service, many suburban areas are well connected through the regular passenger trains that ply between Ernakulam and Aluva. They stop at Edapally, Kumabalangi, Angamally and Aroor stations.

 

The auto rickshaws are the cheapest means of transportation and there is an auto stand in each bus stop. It is better to negotiate the rate before boarding the autos. Taxis are very convenient and comfortable means of transport though the rates will be double that of an auto. But the charges are fixed and no need for bargain. If you book cabs, they offer you half day or full day services and you have to call the car rental service and make prior bookings.

 

You can enjoy riding cheap ferries in Kochi. The inter island ferries from Fort Kochi to Park Jetty are available at very cheap costs. You can also reach Vypeen from Fort Kochi through ferries. The ferry services from Ernakulam to Vypeen and Ernakulam to Willingdon Island are operated every half an hour.
