Chinese Fishing Nets are popular attraction in the shores of Kochi. They are fixed land installations with an unusual form of fishing. They are fixed on the shores and operated by up to six fishermen. They are 10 meters in height and have cantilever and the net is suspended over the sea with large stones used as counterweights.
When a man walks along the main beam, the net gets into the sea and after a short while, it is raised by pulling on ropes. They have limited operating depth and cannot be operated in tidal waters. It was said to have been introduced by the Chinese explorer named Zheng Ge and also said to have introduced by Portuguese Casado settlers. The fine appearance of these nets and the slow rhythm of their operation have made them one of the tourist attractions in Kochi.
