Waman Bhonsle Biography

Waman Bhonsle is a veteran film editor of Bollywood films. He owns many hit films to his credit, and he is a National award winner too. He won National film awards for best editing for Vinod Khanna starerr Inkar, released in 1977. He has earlier edited Vinod Khanna starrer Mere Gaon Mere Desh, where the actor played antagonist. Aamir Khan starrer Ghulam is one memorable work of his career, best known for the risky train sequence which he edited. Agneepath, Parichay, Mausam, Aandhi, Hero, Kalicharan, Karz, Saaheb, Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Do Raaste, Dostana – his list of hit films is so long. He received Filmfare Award for Best Editing for Saudagar in 1992.

Waman Bhonsle hails from a small village Pomburpa from Goa. He was born on 19 February 1932 as the third son born to Pandhary and Krishnabai Bhonsle. He came to Mumbai in the early 1950s and later pursued a career in Bollywood. He joined as an assistant to Editor D. N. Pai at Bombay Talkies in 1952, and learnt about editing. Raj Khosla’s blockbuster film "Do Raaste" in 1969 was his first full-fledged project as an independent editor. Rajesh Khanna was riding on the success of Aradhana when the movie got released, and it turned to be a huge blockbuster too. Actress Mumtaz who was then known to be a B-grade actress also established her career in Bollywood with this single film.

After the success of "Do Raaste", he received handful of projects from Bollywood, and he never looked back. He went on to work with film directors of different generations and enjoyed success with all of them. He was active in Bollywood till 2002, after which he took sabbatical. Since early 1950s, he spent long 5 decades in Bollywood cinema, witnessing its change over the years and three generations.
