V. K. Pavithran Biography 
V. K. Pavithran was a critically acclaimed director of Malayalam cinema, known for the movies – Uppu and Utharam. His last film Kuttappan Sakshi was released in 2002. His other works include - Yaro Oral (1978) and Bali (1991). He is also known for producing the highly controversial movie made during Emergency period based on leftist ideologies - Kabani Nadi Chuvannappol. The movie was directed by his friend P. A. Backer. His directoral debut - Uppu won the National Film Award for Best Regional Film. He was married to noted Mohiniyattam artist - Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, and the couple’s daughter Eva has appeared in a few movies. They have one more daughter Lakshmi.
A maverick genius, Vattamparambil Krishnan Pavithran was born in 1950. After graduation, he tried to get admission at FTII, Pune twice and he failed in both these attempts. Though he joined Law College Pune, the magic of cinema attracted him a lot. He spent his time in the Film Institute seeing world classics and used those occasions to get close to cine artists. Director P. A. Backer was his friend and Pavithran was associated with the controversial movie - Kabani Nadi Chuvannappol as a producer.
He made his directorial debut with Yaro Oral. Critically acclaimed director G. Aravindan composed the music for this movie. This movie marked the beginning of a new genre of movies in Malayalam cinema - personal cinema, which is deliberately anti-realist. The film bagged three state awards including Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography for the year 1978. His next movie – Uppu belonged to mainstream cinema and won National award for best film in Malayalam. Along with John Abraham, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, G. Aravindan, P.A. Backer, T.V. Chandran and K.R. Mohanan, he shared the position of offbeat movie makers of Malayalam.
