Uttara Mhatre Kher Biography

Uttara Mhatre Kher is a former Indian model and beauty pageant contestant from India. After winning the Navy Queen Ball in 1981, she contested Miss India beauty pageant the following year. She was crowned Femina Miss India World and represented India at the Miss World 1982 pageant. She is the daughter-in-law of renowned actress Usha Kiran. Uttara married Usha Kiran’s son, Adwait Kher. Both her daughters are into Bollywood scene - Saiyami Kher, known for playing lead role in Mirzya and Saunskruti Kher, who was seen in 3 Storeys and a few more films. Actress Tanvi Azmi, a member of Akhtar-Azmi film family is her her sister-in-law. Thus she is a relative to Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar and their filmy family too.

Uttara Mhatre Kher was born on 29 December 1963. She started her professional career as a model, and after being crowned as Femina Miss India World in 1982, she got a lot of modelling assignments in the early 1980s. She appeared in over a hundred commercials and print campaigns, and also featured as a cover girl in many leading fashion magazines. She got married to Adwait Kher, also a former model and son of renowned actress Usha Kiran. After her marriage she quit glamour world and settled with family life, looking after two daughters who later joined Bollywood cinema.

After taking retirement from modelling, she moved with her husband to Nastik, where they got into restaurant business. They own three restaurants named Tandoor, Aangan and The Bombay Talkies. Later they diversified their business to furniture business and conduct regular exhibitions in Mumbai. Uttara is also associated with an NGO, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, where she serves as the head of woman’s wing.
