Usha Kiran Biography

Usha Kiran was a popular heroine and supporting actress of Bollywood and Marathi films in the black and white era of movie world. In a career spanning over 4 decades, she did a few memorable roles in both these languages and had done over 50 movies. Her most notable movies include - Daag (1952), Patita (1953), Baadbaan (1954), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975) and Bawarchi (1972). She was also the Sheriff of Mumbai during 1996–97. She was a leading actress in the black and white era of 50’s and later, during 70’s, she shifted towards character roles. She has worked in a few movies where Jaya Baduri was casted as the leading actress. Chupke chupke, Mili and Bawarchi are a few instances where she worked with Jaya.

 

Usha kiran was born on April 22, 1929. She started her acting journey through Marathi plays. M. G. Rangnekar's Marathi play Ashirwad was her debut theatre work. She debut silver screen playing small role in the movie – Kalpana (1948). It was the debut movie of actress Padmini too. The movie based on dance starred Uday Shankar and his wife Amala Shankar as leads and the movie was produced and directed by Uday Shankar himself.

 

Then she became active in the industry. She won the very first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955 for the movie, Baadban released in 1954. Her other popular movies include Nazrana, Daag, Patita and Kabuliwala. She has done a quite few Marathi movies as well. For her performance in Kanyadaan, she won Maharashtra Government’s award for best actress. Her other Marathi movies include - Shikleli Bayko, Jasach Tase, Postatli Mulgi, Dudh Bhakar, Kanchanganga, Stree Janma Hi Tuzi Kahani and Gariba Gharchi Lek.

 

 She has worked along with leading heroes of the industry - Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan. She was married to Dr. Manohar Kher. Her daughter Tanvi Azmi also works for movies and television serials at present. Her other Bollywood works include Gehri daag, Sarkar, Anuraag (1956), Dost, Parivar, Adhikar, Badshah, Maya Machhindra and Madhosh.
