Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni Biography 
Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni is a well-known filmmaker associated with Marathi cinema. He has own many accolades for his directorial ventures, and his films have been screened at multiple international film festivals. He has directed highly acclaimed Marathi movies such as Valu, Vihir, Deool and Highway. His film Deool won the 59th National Film Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Actor and Best Dialogue awards. Girni won the National Film Award for the Best Non Feature Film. Valu was featured in the Berlin film festival. Vihir was featured in Berlin film festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival.
Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, simply called Umesh Kulkarni was born on 6 December 1976 in Pune. Vinayak and Vishakha Kulkarni are his parents. He graduated in commerce from BMCC, Pune, and also took an LLB degree before he switched to film field. He is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He joined FTII in February 2000. Initially he made short films such as Girni, Three of Us, Vilay and Gaarud, before he turned a full-fledged film director of Marathi film industry. He has also produced Marathi movies such as Masala, Pune 52 etc.
He owns 8 short films to his credit. A three-time National award winning acclaimed director of Marathi cinema, he conducts workshops also. He is passionate about short films as an independent form of storytelling. He made Girni while he was studying in Film Institute, Pune. The 22-minute short film told the story of a middle class family which starts a business. The film travelled across 40 international film festivals and won many awards too.
