Thodupuzha Vasanthi Biography

Thodupuzha Vasanthi is well known character artist of Malayalam cinema. She has been a well-established theatre artist before coming to movies and small or big, she has done more than 400 films mostly in Malayalam and a few in Tamil. She has also done many telefilms, dance shows and television serials. She currently works as dance teacher at Varamani Natyalaya. She represented a middle class woman in most her film roles and most of them were powerful and real woman characters without any make up. In 2012, she was awarded with Chalachithra Prathiba Award by Kerala Film Critics Association.

She was born in a family of artists. Her father was very interested in arts and theatre and was a stage artist. He wanted his wife also to join him in stage, which she didn’t. So he desired his daughter to act with him on stages and thus Vasanthi received encouragement from father, in those days when theatre for ladies was still a taboo to conservative society. Her elder sister learnt classical dance and performed arangettam and Vasanthi switched on to plays. During younger days, she mostly appeared in male Hindu gods and characters like Siva, Ekalavya, Arjun etc. She learnt Thiruvathira from her mother.

She reached movies through a dance sequence of Dharmakshetre Kurukshetre (1975) of Udaya Studios. Abhinivesam, directed by I V Sasi and Ente Neelakasham were her earliest noted appearances. She got associated with professional drama during this stage. She enacted numerous mother-in-law roles on screen. K. J. George’s Yavanika was her real breakthrough. After that she became a busy star of films. Aalolam and God Father are her favourite roles.
