Tarak Nath Das Biography

Tarak Nath Das also pronounced Taraknath Das was an Indian revolutionary from Bengal who fought against British rule. He was an internationalist scholar who discussed his game plans with Tolstoy and is best known for his debate with Leo Tolstoy on non-violence. He also served as a professor of political science at Columbia University and was a pioneering immigrant in the west coast of North America. He was the voice of the Indian freedom struggle in the U.S.

 

He was born into a middle-class Bengali family in 1884. His father was a clerk at the Central Telegraph Office in Kolkata. He was brilliant in hi school studies. He joined the Anushilan Samiti, an anti-British secret society in colonial Bengal and fled to the United States, via Japan in 1907. He initially worked at a farm land and later worked at the laboratory of University of California. Then he enrolled for higher studies in the same institution and secured a job too. He entered the Department of Immigration, Vancouver in 1908 where he was asked to report against his compatriots, especially from eastern India. He helped the poor and Sikh communities.

 

In 1908, he started a monthly magazine called ‘Free Hindustan’ and a school for the Indian immigrants to learn English and legal rights. He joined the Norwich Military Academy in Vermont on insistence of his mentor Jatindranath Mukherjee, but got expelled for his anti-British activities. Then he completed his education at Seattle. He was closely associated with the Gadar Party led by Har Dayal and also Vishnu Ganesh Pingle. After several efforts, he became a US citizen and continued with his struggle for Indian independence.
