Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari Biography

Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was an Indian nationalist and political leader of India, who lived during 25 December 1880 – 10 May 1936. He was a pioneer surgeon also. One of the prominent Muslim nationalist leaders from present-day Uttar Pradesh, he has served as president of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League during the Indian Independence Movement. He was one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University, and served the position of chancellor from 1928 to 1936, till his death. Now the fourth generation of Ansari family is into politics, associated with Bahujan Samaj Party.

 

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was born on 25 December 1880. Born in Yusufpur-Mohammadabad town, the family later shifted to Hyderabad. Ansari obtained a medical degree from the Madras Medical College and went to England for higher studies. After working as a surgeon in England for many years he established as a pioneer in surgery. In the last decade of his life, Ansari performed over 700 such grafting operations. He also published one book Regeneration of Man, based on his experiences.

 

Dr. Ansari became involved in the Indian Independence Movement during his stay in England. He later moved back to Delhi and joined both the Indian Congress and the Muslim League. He served as the Muslim League's president in 1918 and 1920, and also played an important role in the negotiation of the 1916 Lucknow Pact. He served as AICC General Secretary many times, as well as the President of the Indian National Congress during its 1927 session. He lived in a palatial house, called the Darus Salaam or Abode of peace. He died of heart attack in 1936, aged only 55.

 

His family carried forward his legacy and stayed in Uttar Pradesh after partition. His grandsons - Afzal Ansari, Mukhtar Ansari & Sibakatullah Ansari and his great-grandsons - Abbas Ansari and Umar Ansari are political leaders affiliated to Bahujan Samaj Party. His grandson Afzal Ansari currently serves as a parliamentarian in the 17th Lok Sabha. Mohammad Hamid Ansari - retired Indian Foreign Service officer, and 12th Vice President of India, Shaukatullah Shah Ansari, an Indian politician and diplomat and Faridul Haq Ansari, politician and parliamentarian are some other influential members of Ansari family.
