T. S. Nagabharana Biography

T. S. Nagabharana is one of the pioneers of Kannada film industry. He is better known as one of the leading names of parallel cinema who has received numerous state and national awards. He has completed a silver jubilee in his film career and in the career spanning to 26 years, he has won awards for 20 films of the total number of 30, he has directed till now. He has won 8 National Awards and 14 State Awards till now. His full name is Talakadu Srinivasaiah Nagabharana. He has contributed numerous movies for children.

 

T. S. Nagabharana was born on January 23, 1953 in Bangalore. Since college days, he was interested in movies and acting and started his career as a stage actor. He has also directed the plays like the plays Evam Indrajit and Shoka Chakra during his college days. He has also worked as singer for plays. Later he got opportunity to work with great names of Kannada theater like B. V. Karanth, Chandrashekhara Kambara and Girish Karnad. As a theater artist, his noted plays include - Sangya Balya, Kathale Belaku, Shakarana Sarotu, Tingara Buddanna, Jokumaraswamy, Oedipus, Mundena Sakhi Mundena, Hayavadana, Sattavara Neralu, Krishna Parijata and Neegikonda Samsa.

 

As a film director he has directed 30 movies of which a few are blockbusters - Janumada Jodi, Nagamandala and Chinnari Mutha. Other big hits include – Nagamandala, Janumada Jodi and Mysooru Mallige. He has the unique distinction of being the only director to have an entry in the Mainstream section Janumada Jodi and the Indian Panorama Nagamandala in the same year (1998). In 2003, his movie ‘Singaaravva’ was the only Asian movie to be screened in 2003 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The movie also won National award for best regional film. Three of his films have won the best Film on National Integration – Grahana, Santa Sishunala Sharifa and Kallarali Hoovagi. He is the only Indian director to receive this honour.
