T. K. Rajeev Kumar Biography

T. K. Rajeev Kumar is an acclaimed director and screenwriter of Malayalam who has won many state and national awards. Apart from Malayalam cinema, he has also scripted a few Hindi movies and a few of his Malayalam movies have been remade to other languages as well. In 2001 he received Kerala state film award for best story for Shesham, the movie directed by himself. Knanakathu, Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu, Thacholi Varghese Chekavar, Shesham, Rathinirvedam remake, Chanakyan, Jalamarmaram, Thalsamayam Oru Penkutty, Ottayal pattalam, Pavitram, Oru naal varum, Seetha Kalyanam and Mahanagaram are his noted works.

 

He was born in Kottayam in 1961. He completed schooling at MT seminary high school, Kottayam and SDV school, Alappuzha and took graduation from University College, Thiruvananthapuram. After studies he began his career as a bank employee with State Bank of Travancore. But later he joined films as an assistant director at the age of 22. He was one of the scriptwriters of India’s first 3D film- My dear Kuttichathan, aside Raghunath Paleri. He also worked as an assistant under Navodaya Appachan and Jose Punnoose for this movie. It was his learning period in the film industry.

 

In 1989 he made his directorial debut through Malayalam movie – Chanakyan, which starred Kamal Hassan, Urmila Matondkar, Jayaram and Sitara in pivot roles. The movie received Kerala Film Critics Award & the Filmfare Award for the Best Director. He directed a campus film Kshanakkathu in 1990 which was noticed for its unique theme and evergreen songs. Urmila Matondkar worked for the second time in Malayalam for his directorial venture - Thacholi Varghese Chekavar, in which she played lead role opposite Mohanlal.

 

Critically acclaimed movie, after which Manju Warrior took a retirement from movies - Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu was also directed by him. His 1999 movie Jalamarmaram bagged National Award for Best Feature Film on Environment and Kerala State Award for Second Best Feature Film 2000. Kushti, Raja Ko Rani Se Pyar Ho Gaya and Chal Chala Chal are his Bollywood directorial ventures. His latest release - Up & Down: Mukalil Oralundu earned him critics’ appreciation.
