T. G. Kamala Devi Biography

T. G. Kamala Devi was a south Indian film actress, playback singer and dubbing artist, associated with early talkies. Her real name is Thota Govindamma, and she is also known as Kamala Chandra Babu. She lived during the period, 29 December 1930 – 16 August 2012 and died at the age of 81 in Chennai. She predominantly worked in Telugu films. Apart from her film career, she was a professional level billiards player who won the Indian Women Billiards title twice. She mostly played supporting roles on screen.

 

Thota Govindamma, better known as T. G. Kamala Devi was born on 29 December 1930 in Karvetinagaram, Chittoor district, Madras Presidency, British India. She rechristened as T. G. Kamala Devi once she entered films in the early 1940s. “T. G” represents the initials of her birth name. She married Avula Chandra Babu in 1946 while she was busy in films, and the couple had one son. After marriage and child birth, she continued with her profession, and was associated with films till 1975. Andhra Pradesh Nataka Academy honoured her with Nataka Kala Prapoorna title.

 

Telugu talkie, Dakshayagnam in 1941 marked her acting debut. Then she appeared in Bala Nagamma, Mugguru Maratilu, Kanjan and Gunasundari Katha in the 1950s, and she was a singing actress of south Indian cinema. She played supporting roles in all these films. Some of her noted works post marriage include – Malliswari, Patala Bhairavi, Palletooru, Thodu Dongalu, Chakrapani and Illarikam in the 1950s and Velugu Needalu, Bhakta Ramadasu, Bangaru Panjaram, Asadhyudu and Kathanayakudu in the 1960s. After a few brief roles in the early 1970s, she quit from acting.
