Swami Rama Biography

Swami Rama was an Indian saint and yogi, also known as a yoga instructor. He was also known for charity and social services. He was the founder of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy in US, with several branches. He has also founded many other teaching and service organizations. He established a large medical facility in the northern part of India in Dehradun to serve millions of poor people in the nearby mountains. Swami Rama authored several books related to his life journey, spirituality, meditation and philosophy. Enlightenment Without God and Living with the Himalayan Masters is one among his famous books.

Swami Rama was born as Brij Kishore Kumar Dhasmana in 1925. He belonged to a small village called Toli in the Garhwal Himalayas. His childhood days were spent in Himalayas. He was raised by his master Bengali Baba, whose life style and thoughts influenced him since young. As instructed by Baba, he used to travel to different temples of the locality and other regions, and learn more about saints. He also visited remote regions of Tibet. Later he chose the path of spirituality which he followed throughout his life.

He served as Shankaracharya of Karvirpitham of South India, during 1949-1952. Later he returned to his guru and practised meditation for many years in the Himalayan caves. Later his guru insisted him to move to West to propagate Hinduism and its messages. Thus he travelled to many parts of United States and Europe, establishing organizations and preaching his messages. He founded Himalayan Institute in US in 1969. Swami Rama received higher education in both India and Europe. Before leaving India, he first reached Nepal where he created his first ashram in the barefoot of Himalayas.
