Suvalakshmi Biography

Suvalakshmi is a film actress active during 1990s and she mostly appeared in Tamil movies. She also has acted in a few Malayalam and Bengali movies. Though born as a Bengali, she was concentrated in Tami film industry and was one of the glowing female stars in the late 1990s. Her looks made her a typical Tamil girl next door, though she is a Bengali, and speaks Tamil fluently. Aasai opposite Ajith, Love Today opposite Vijay and Gokulathil Seethai opposite Karthik made her a household name and she has worked with all leading actors at this time. She was once a frontline heroine in Tamil Cinema. She has done one movie in Malayalam – Anuraga Kottaram opposite Dileep.

She was born to K. C. Munshi and Indrani Devi in Kolkata, West Bengal in 1977. His father was an engineer. She had one brother Subrata who died in an accident. She entered movies while she was doing Law studies. She completed LLB in between her tight shooting schedules. But she fully got engaged into film profession. She got her first film offer from legendary Satyajit Ray which was quite unbelievable to him. She even met him, had an interview for two hours and she was finalized for the lead heroine role. However Ray passed away very soon and the project was later completed by his son - Sandip Ray and she was given the same role. The movie was ‘The Broken Journey’, screened at 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Vasant’s friend happened to watch that movie and recommended her name to Vasant, who was in search of a new girl for his movie – Asai. Thus she made her Tamil film debut.

She is a homely girl and owns a similar image in movies, particularly after Aasai and Gokulathil Seethai. She often feels type casted after everyone accepted her this way after these movies. To break that homely image she often experimented with new roles. After her marriage to Swagato Banerjee, she chose to bid bye to acting and hot happily settled in California. Later she turned down many offers including a meaty role in Santosh Subramaniam, a tele serial and a game show.
