Suthivelu Biography

Suthivelu was a noted comedian and character artist associated with Telugu cinema. In a career spanning to about three decades since early 1980s, he acted in more than 200 films and won Nandi state awards 4 times, three times for Best comedian and once for best supporting character (Vandematharam – 1985). He won Nandi award for best comedian for the movies, Devalayam (1985), Geethanjali (1989) and Masteri Kapuram (1990). Thus he won two Nandi awards for the year 1985. He was active in the film scene till his death in 2012 and his last film, Ramachari was released in 2013 posthumously. James bond Junior was the last role he portrayed on big screen. Anandobrahma and Lady Detective are his noted television works.

Suthivelu’s real name is Kurumaddali Lakshmi Narasimha Rao. He was born to a school teacher on 7 August 1947, just one week before Indian independence. Bhogireddypalli of Andhra Pradesh was his native place. He made his acting debut at the age of 7 as a child artist on stage. Since younger days he got attached to theatre and acting and dreamt to become an actor in future. But his interest in films was discouraged by his father in his younger days. However he made his film debut with “Mudda Mandaaram".

Started his career as a comedian in the early 1980s, he frequently appeared in Jandhyala's films. In fact his potential as a comedian was well exposed by this director. He shared amazing chemistry with actor Suthi Veerabhadrarao on screen and both together gave some hilarious scenes to Telugu cinema. The popular comedy duo was nicknamed Suthi Janta. He was very lean during his younger days which earned him the nickname ‘Velu’ and later this tag got permanently added to his name. Following his noted role in Naalugu Stambhalata as Suthi, he came to be known as Suthi Velu.
