Sunil Sukthankar Biography

Sunil Sukthankar is a very famous filmmaker and screenwriter associated with Marathi cinema and Marathi theatre. He along with Sumitra Bhave forms the successful filmmaker duo, Sumitra Bhave–Sunil Sukthankar who has given some significant contributions to Marathi art and cinema in the past 3-4 decades or so. The duo has made 14 films, more than 50 short films and 4 TV serials, predominantly in Marathi cinema. Recipient of several state and national awards, Doghi, Samhita, Astu, Kaasav, Vastupurush, Ek Cup Chya and Dahavi Fa are their remarkable works which won then accolades. These films have won multiple awards at various award functions including National film awards and a few of them were showcased at various international film festivals.

Sukthankar was born on 31 May 1966 in Karad. After completing his graduation in commerce, he joined the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India, Pune to pursue a course in film direction. He also remained a theater activist during this period, giving some significant contribution to Marathi Theater as a playwright and director. He wrote and directed several street plays too.

Sukthankar was introduced to Bhave through her daughter while she was making her debut short film Bai in the mid-1980s. Thus began a successful association of two talented artists, who give some significant contributions to Marathi cinema. The duo made their first film, Doghi in 1995 which fetched several awards including state awards and national awards. As of now, the duo has received 5 National awards, 17 Maharashtra state awards, 3 V. Shanta Ram awards and more than 7 International Film Festivals for their work.

The duo makes short films and documentaries apart from feature films, and most of them have been recognized at various award functions and film festivals, earning them accolades. Kaasav, Astu and Samhita are their recent works. Kaasav released in 2016 earned them Best Feature Film award at National film awards and state awards, and many more. He also works as an editor and lyricist in the industry.
