Sudeep Chatterjee Biography

Sudeep Chatterjee is a National award winning cinematographer from Kolkata who works in Bollywood. One of the busy artists in this field, he is best known for his works in Iqbal (2005), Dor (2006), Dhoom 3 (2013), Chak De! India (2007), Guzaarish (2010), Baby (2015) and Bajirao Mastani (2015). He is associated with both commercial and offbeat movies. Yet all of his works have been critically acclaimed. In 2014 he won National Award for best Cinematographer for the Bengali movie – Chotushkone. Though associated with several high expensive projects of Bollywood like Bajirao Mastani, Baby, Dhoom 3, this cinematographer enjoys shooting for small budget films as well.

 

Known for his success association with directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bajirao Mastani is his highly praised work in the recent times. The movie excelled in camera work in all aspects. He associated with the same director earlier in Guzaarish (2010), the movie which earned him IIFA Award, Screen Award and Apsara Award for Best cinematographer. In 2008 he accumulated awards including Filmfare for Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De! India. He received Screen Award Nomination for his movies – Road and Iqbal too.

 

Sudeep was born and brought up in Kolkata. He was given a camera by his father after passing 10th standard exams. Though he joined an Engineering college, his passion to camera and cinema prompted him to join the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India Pune and studied cinematography. He started off with ads and documentary films soon after his course at FTII. His first film was Bada Din (1997), the break given by Anjan Dutt. But the movie was a flop and later he changed his direction to television shows. Salman Khan starrer Lucky: No Time for Love (2005) was one of his earliest noted works followed by Iqbal (2005) and Dor (2006), which established his name in Bollywood. Since then he is associated with leading directors of Bollywood, apart from Bengali movies. Kaalpurush (2008) and Chotushkone (2014) are his best Bengali works.
