Subrata Sen Biography

Subrata Sen is a noted Bengali writer and film maker known for many critically acclaimed works. As a film director, he debut in the year 2001 with the movie, Ek Je Achhe Kanya followed by Swapner Feriwala, Nil Nirjane, Bibar, Koyekti Meyer Golpo and Hotath Neerar Jonnyo. His debut movie has been acknowledged by the Jadavpur University as the "First New wave Film" for the young generation in the post Satyajit Ray era and has been included in University's Film Studies course from 2002.

Subrata Sen was born in Kolkata in 1963. He became graduated in physics from Presidency College, Kolkata. Then he worked in a bank for a short period and then joined journalism in 1987 in Anandabazar Patrika. He shifted from Anandabazar Patrika to The Statesman in 1992. He joined Banglalive dot com, an internet magazine and worked there till he debut as a director in Bengali cinema. Through the debut movie, Ek Je Achhe Kanya he made great waves in India as well as abroad. This movie marked the debut of noted film actress, Konkona Sen Sharma and this movie was shown at Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The movie helped him to earn Gollapudi Srinivas National Award for a debut director.

His second movie, Swapner Feriwala was released one year later in 2002. Though the movie was not commercially successful, it gathered critics’ appreciation and entered into Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Thus he made a distinct mark as a talented director of new millennium. His third movie, Nil Nirjane released in the year 2003 was the first digital movie made in India. Though the movie was loved by audience, it was a bit controversial too. The film won the Best Experimental Film award at the Down Under Film Festival, Australia. Sen's films are said to be the beginning of "urban genre" of Bengali films and have been included in the study materials of many film courses in Bengal.
