Subodh Roy Biography

Subodh Roy was a freedom fighter and revolutionary associated with Indian freedom struggle movement from undivided Bengal. An activist associated with Bengali Indian independence movement, he later turned a politician of Communist Party of India. He was the youngest participant in the famous Chittagong armoury raid led by Surya Sen in 1930. Roy got arrested by British and deported to Cellular Jail in Port Blair in 1934, where he spent many years. During his stay in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, he along with his friends got drawn towards Communist Party of India. Following his release in 1946 he became a member of Communist Party and served as a member till his death in 2006.

 

Subodh was born into a rich family in Chittagong in the year 1916. On 18th April 1930, when Surya Sen led a group of revolutionaries to conduct the armory raid of police at Chittagong Subodh was the youngest member of the group. He was only 14 then. Nirmal SenPritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutta, Ganesh Ghosh, Lokenath Bal, Binod Bihari Chowdhury, Ambika Chakrabarty, Harigopal Bal etc were the major leaders who participated in the raid. Though the group captured arms, it failed to get the ammunition. Later they hoisted Indian flag in the premises before they left. Massive raid was made by British later and they managed to trace the whereabouts of a few of the revolutionaries who participated in Chittagong armoury raid.

 

Subodh got caught by British police and was given a life term imprisonment for his involvement in the incident, along with many of his friends. He was among the first batch members and initially given death sentence. It was changed to life sentence for being a minor and was deported to Andaman Cellular Jail in 1934. He got released in 1946. While at jail when the group of revolutionaries formed a communist group, Subodh too was a member. He was the last person to be released from jail.

 

He joined the Communist Party of India after his release and moved to Kolkata, following Partition. He became a member of Provincial Centre of the Party. Following the party split in 1964, he joined Marxist group and was a longstanding member of the West Bengal state committee of CPI (Marxist). He edited a book "Communism in India: Unpublished Documents".
