Subhadra Joshi Biography

Subhadra Joshi was a female freedom fighter, activist, politician and social worker who lived during the period, 23 March 1919 – 30 October 2003. She actively participated in Quit India Movement 1942. After Indian independence she was fully active in politics and also served as a parliamentarian. She was a parliamentarian for four terms from 1952-1977 from Balrampur and Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituencies and has done significant contributions during her tenure. She is a recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Sadhbhavana Award and a commemorative stamp was issued in her honour by Department of Posts in 2011. Joshi died on 30 October 2003 after prolonged illness, aged 86.

 

She was born in Sialkot of present day Pakistan. Her father V.N Datta was a police officer with British. She schooled at Maharaja Girls' School, Jaipur, and completed her graduation and post-graduation from Lahore. She completed Master’s in in Political Science, and during her college days she got active with politics and freedom struggle movement. Got influenced by Gandhi’s freedom struggle movement she visited his Ashram at Wardha and worked under Aruna Asaf Ali as a freedom activist while studying at Lahore.

 

Later she relocated to Delhi, where she worked as an editor of ‘Hamara Sangram’, a journal. For her freedom struggle activities she got arrested and she had to spend a short time at Lahore Women's Central Jail. When Indian independence was announced and partition was inevitable, communal riots spread across North India. She started a peace volunteer organization, ‘Shanti Dal’ to help the needy. She stood for communal harmony and played a significant role as a peace maker during the communal riots that took place in the 1960s. She also served as a parliamentarian for four terms from 1952 to 1977.
