Sreelatha Namboothiri Biography

Sreelatha Namboothiri is a veteran character artist associated with Malayalam cinema. 'Aashadeepam' in the year 1953 marked her acting debut as a child artist and she re-entered Malayalam cinema as an adult actress through the movie -  'Khadeeja' in 1967. Since then she has portrayed numerous character roles for a career spanning to about 50 years and this actress has successfully completed glorious 63 years in Malayalam cinema, since her debut as a child artist. Sreelatha is mostly noted for her pairing with comedy king Adoor Bhasi and they have shared screen space in numerous Malayalam oldies. Currently she portrays a noted role in the popular television series - 'Karutha Muthu' on Asianet Channel.

Sreelatha was born to Balakrishnan Nair and Kamalamma at Karuvatta in Alappuzha district. She is the niece of noted film actress Kumari Thankam (father’s sister). She completed her school education from Haripad, Alappuzha and has been an athlete during those days. She was associated with theatre as an actress and singer since her 7^th grade studies and she has been an artist of the famous KPAC drama troupe. She is a trained classical singer too. She learnt music from legendary musician Dakshinamurthy and has given a few music concerts too. She married Dr. Kaladi Namboothiri, an Ayurvedic doctor in 1979 and he passed away in 2005. The couple had two kids. She was converted to Antharjanam after marriage and she took a break from acting after marriage. The couple had acted in one movie in 1979 - Papathinu Maranamilla. She returned to acting after her husband’s death.

Marked her debut as a child artist, later she moved to character and comic roles. She always played second fiddle as heroine’s sister or friend. Her screen chemistry with Adoor Bhasi, mostly in detective movies was quite appreciated in those days. Adoor Bhasi, Sreelatha and Bahadoor trio has given several hilarious comedy scenes to Malayalam cinema in the 1970s. She has also done playback singing for popular songs like "Angadi marunnukal njan cholli tharam Oronnay".
