Soumik Haldar Biography

Soumik Haldar is a well-known cinematographer and photographer from Kolkata, West Bengal. He is predominantly associated with Bengali cinema, in entertainment industry, and studied from the very prestigious Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. As a film cinematographer, he is best known for his works in Bengali movies - Chander Pahar, Nirbaak and Chotoder Chobi. "Amazon obhijaan", "Uma", "Yeti obhijaan" and "Chaamp" are among his most recent works. He has also worked as a director of photography in cine industry.

 

He was born in Kolkata on 1st June, 1975. He got drawn towards films as a child, and started following film news and updates since then. When he came to know about FTII though the interviews given by cine stars, he got interested in studying in that institute. He got attracted to the world of photography when a Zenith camera taught him how to look at things differently. In fact B&W photography helped him to learn better the tonal separation. It was in the mid-1990s when he learnt a lot about photography and later he joined FTII. During his years of diploma in the film institute, he got into touch with the photographer Hari Nair. Thus he joined as an assistant photographer of Hari Nair in the 1990s.

 

As an assistant photographer, his first assignment was Bollywood movie, Shool starring Manoj Bajpayee. He got drawn to mainstream and later he succeeded in this field. As a director of photography he became high in demand in the 2000s. Top filmmakers queue outside his home to have him as their director of photography. Though he started off with Bollywood cinema, he completely switched over to Bengali cinema, a decision he never regrets till now.
