Sonia Sahni Biography

Sonia Sahni is a former Bollywood actress, best known for playing supporting and second lead roles in movies of early 1970s. She appeared in classic comedy, Buddha Mil Gaya, and was also seen in Hulchul, Bobby, Malik, Dharam Karam, Chacha Bhatija, Upasana, Sharafat, Andaz, Darpan and Jangal Mein Mangal. She was most active in the first half of 1970s with handful of roles, though in supporting cast. She was last seen in 2013 film, Love in Bombay and also appeared in one television show, Santoshi Maa (2015 - 2017) playing the role of grandmother. She was fully active the industry from late 1960s to late 1990s, though her career didn’t take off.

 

Sonia Sahni is the screen name of Usha Sahni, and she is of Lahore origin. Her father was from Lahore and her mother from Peshawar. The couple shifted to Kashmir long before partition happened, and Sonia was born there. She married Shiv Palitana, and has one son. It was Shiv’s second marriage, and he has one son from first marriage.

 

As a film actress Sonia marked her screen debut with 1965 film, Johar-Mehmood in Goa. She played the supporting role of Rita in the movie, which was a commercial success. Since then she has portrayed both positive and vamp roles on screen, including a few second lead roles. Her first break was given by I. S. Johar, who later casted her in a few more films such as Johar in Kashmir, Johar in Bombay, Mera Naam Johar which fall in lines with her debut flick, and Johar played lead role in all. At a young age she played Rishi Kapoor’s mother in super hit film, Bobby.
