Shobana Biography

Shobana is an Indian actress and a dancer who concentrated in the Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films in eighties and nineties. She received Padma Shri award for her talents in 2006 from Government of India.

 

She was born on 21st March 1966 in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Her parents are Anandam and Chandrakumar. The dance sisters Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini are her aunties. She is the niece of her paternal aunt veteran actress Sukumari. She remained single and did not marry anyone. Film actresses Revathi, Suhasini and Rohini are her friends.

 

She had learned Bharatanatyam and has a flair for hairdressing and make up. She styles the hair of Kushboo when they work together and other co artists. She got her training in dance at the Chidambaram academy in Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The popular Bharatanatyam dancer Chitra Visweswaran is her guru. She had adopted a girl child and named her Anantha Narayani.

 

Her debut film was in Malayalam, April 18 at her age of 18 which was directed by Balachandra Menon. Her second film was Kanamarayathu in the year 1984 with Mammootty. Her Tamil debut was Enakkul Oruvan by S. P. Muthuraman. She acted with Kamal Haasan in this film. She paired with Rajnikanth in some films like Thalapathi and Siva. She acted in the direction of Mani Ratnam in the film Thalapathi.

 

She also concentrated in Telugu film industry and made her debut through Vikram. Her film Manichitrathazhu by Fazil won her first National Film Award for Best Actress in 1994. She won the same award for the second time for her role in the film Mitr, My Friend in English.

 

Her Abhinaya in Bharatanatyam made her very famous. She performed this art before the king and queen of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Her extraordinary skills in dance and beautiful look made her to be considered as the most beautiful South Indian actress in 1980s. She participated in the stage show of Mani Ratnam, Netru, Indru, Naalai.

 

She started a school for teaching Bharatanatyam in Chennai called Kalarpana. This institution organizes festivals throughout India. She also does social activities under its banner extending support to the handicapped.
