Shiv Sunder Das Biography

Shiv Sunder Das is an Indian cricketer who has played a few international matches in the early 2000s. Though hailed as India’s genuine test player, he couldn’t meet with those expectations and was finally dropped out. He played an outstanding domestic career as a right-handed batsman with Odisha state team and regarded as the best batsman Odisha has ever produced. He played 23 tests and 4 ODIs for team India, scoring 1326 and 39 runs respectively. He played 180 first class matches scoring 10908 runs. He has also played three Twenty20 matches. Made his first class debut in 1993-1994 season he retired from all forms of cricket in 2013.

 

He was born on 5 November 1977 in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. He started of his first class cricket career in the 1993-1994 season with Odisha team and served as opening batsman for many years. He was selected to National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in the year 2000 and subsequently made his international debut the same year in a test series against Bangladesh in Dhaka later that year. Since then he has been associated with national team till December 2002. In between he played 23 test matches and 4 ODIs for team India. He made two centuries against Zimbabwe in his test career, and in the series against Zimbabwe, he was awarded ‘Man of the series’.

 

He was hailed as the new find for test cricket. However his batting career with Indian team was not promising. He was repeatedly found stuck on the back foot in India’s tour in West Indies and failed repeatedly after getting good starts. After dropped out from the team he continued with domestic cricket. He played his last first class match in 2012 December-2013 January against Delhi, as a team member of Vidarbha. Apart from a batsman, he also served as Right-arm medium bowler for his team. In 2002 he made 250 runs against Essex during India's tour to England. He has also served as India’s captain of A-team for its England tour.
